This is dependant on the material regarding the application and the frequency of use. Granite, natural and man made quartz stone require less maintenance as the products are dense and hard due to their composition.  Marbles and some hard limestones require more maintenance than say some soft limestones and sandstones and Onyx products as they are more delicate.  

Before selecting a product it is wise to seek advice prior to purchase. Here at G Miccoli and Sons we will advise you what is the best product for the application and the best way to maintain it.

Regarding the different finishes to material there are the following ;

1. A polished or high gloss finish is easier to clean and maintain as the polish acts as a barrier to the material itself. In the case of external cladding, kitchens or vanity tops we recommend a polished finish as this provides a protective barrier to resist erosion and staining. In wet areas such as swimming pools and bathrooms it is not recommend on floors as this will make the product slippery.  

2. There is 'honed' or matt finish, this can be very engaging to the eye however it is not more susceptable to staining and marking. However, due to its anti slip properties we would advise a honed finish in wet areas such as pools and bathrooms.  

3. Sandblasted/leathered or rough textured finish - Not recommended to internal floors bar wet areas as the finish makes the product anti slippery

Maintenance regarding the products ; all can be cleaned with a neutral detergent however unpolished products or softer materials such as limestone will need more periodically cleaning.   

Sealing - There are solvent, water and oil based sealers. Solvent and oil based sealers are stronger and more protective however it is wise to check with us which sealer can be used with which product. All products should be sealed periodically depending on use and hardness of product. Applying several coats of sealer will not make a softer product more resistant than a harder product or produce the same level of protection.
